HAVING enjoyed a taste of the electric atmosphere in Glasgow last week, Newport’s newest sprint star Mica Moore can’t wait to head north again for the Commonwealth Games.

Glasgow 2014 finally gets under way next week and Moore and her 4x100m relay teammates are keen to build on a sixth place finish in the Diamond League meeting at Hampden Park.

Moore, Hannah Brier, Hannah Thomas and Lucy Evans finished behind two Great Britain teams, an all stars team and US and Polish quartets in 45.10sec.

“We ran our second fastest time in the Diamond League so we were really pleased with that,” said the 21-year-old.

“It’s a really nice stadium and it wasn’t too full when we were there but the shape of it makes the crowd sound really loud.

“And it should be a good crowd when we race because Usain Bolt is going in the men’s relay so there will be a lot of interest that night.

“We met Yohan Blake at the weekend and we were a bit star-struck but it was a really good experience and I can’t wait for the Games now.”

Moore is already looking forward to sampling the delights of Rod Stewart and Susan Boyle at the opening ceremony on Wednesday.

But before the fun begins she has joined the rest of the Team Wales athletics squad in Portugal for some serious warm weather training.

The team flew out on Wednesday after Moore had won the women’s 100m A final and helped Wales to victory in the 4x100m relay at the Welsh Athletics International in Cardiff the night before.

The Birchfield Harriers sprinter believes the trip will be vital as the relay girls look to perfect their changeovers.

“I always seem to run better after warm weather training,” said Moore.

“And I think we could definitely go quicker than last week because some of the changeovers were a bit messy.

“We’re stretching them out as much as possible to try and drop the time.

“Then we fly to Glasgow on Tuesday ready for the opening ceremony, which should be great fun.

“I’ve heard that Rod Stewart and Subo are performing. I’m not sure they’re really my music of choice but I’m sure I’ll have a little dance in the stadium!”

Fellow Newport youngster Sebastian Blanch made his outdoor Wales under-20 400m debut in Cardiff on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old Newport Harrier ran a fine race to come third behind Australian senior Alex Carew and Welsh senior international David Guest.

Blanch will compete for Wales under-18s in the Celtic Games in Dublin next month.
