NEWPORT cyclist Jon Mould hopes that some fine-tuning in his home city can help fire him to glory at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Mould has spent the past two winter seasons with Wales’ UCI track team, Team USN, competing at Track World Cups.
He put in world class performances, collecting bronze medals in the points and scratch events. In the 2014 Pearl Izumi Tour Series he also secured three round victories, coming away with the Sprint jersey.
Mould returned to the National Velodrome in Newport to finish his preparations for Glasgow.
Endurance has been the key to his training, with the track events taking place on the first four days of the Games before taking to the streets to prepare for the road race on the final day.
“It was good to get back on the boards in Newport, get stuck in and not have to worry about anything else just train hard.
“After the Nationals in Monmouth we went out to Poland and raced a UCI Class 1 event where I won the Points race and helped Sam (Harrison) get third in the Scratch race. It was good to find your feet again on the boards.”
Mould will be joined by Harrison and Owain Doull on the track in Glasgow, where he will compete in the points and scratch races at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
He will then support Geraint Thomas, who is currently on Tour de France duty, and Luke Rowe in the road race through the city centre.
Jon began his cycling career by dropping in to Newport Velo Youth Cycling Club Saturday sessions, and riding the boards in Newport.
This will be Jon’s second Commonwealth Games, his first four years ago when he travelled to Delhi in 2010 with Team Wales.
“I rode Delhi in 2010, but now it’s another four years later, so I definitely want to go there and make more of an impact. To come back from Glasgow with a medal is my goal for the Commonwealth Games, my preparations have gone well so hopefully I can deliver.”
