GYMNAST Francesca ‘Frankie’ Jones has been announced as the Team Wales flag bearer for tomorrow's Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.
The five-time British champion is thrilled to be given the honour of carrying the Welsh flag into Celtic Park on Wednesday evening.
Jones said: “It’s a massive honour to have been selected as the Team Wales flagbearer. I never expected it and only found out last night.
"I was just so shocked. It’s just such a massive and amazing team this year as well so it’s a complete privilege and I really hope I can do everybody proud.”
Glasgow 2014 will be Jones’ third Commonwealth Games representing Wales.
In her Commonwealth debut in Melbourne 2006 the rhythmic gymnast finished 14th overall. In Delhi 2010 she returned to Wales with a silver medal in the prestigious hoop discipline.
Team Wales Chef de Mission, Brian Davies said: “We are delighted to announce Frankie Jones as our Team Wales flag bearer for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
“Frankie is a perfect choice having won a silver medal in Delhi, competed at the London 2012 Olympic Games and now aiming for another medal in Glasgow.
“This will be Frankie’s third, and final, Commonwealth Games which is a huge achievement in a sport dominated by young talent.
“There is no doubt the whole sport in Wales has grown off the back of her personal success and without her we would not have had such a thriving and ambitious Rhythmic team here in Glasgow.
“She is also a superb role model for every aspiring athlete and we wish her all the best for the Games.”
The Glasgow 2014 Opening Ceremony will take place at Celtic Park tomorrow night and will be broadcast live on BBC One from 8pm.
