NEWPORT County AFC may yet return to the transfer market with boss Justin Edinburgh still planning to improve his squad, the Argus can exclusively reveal.
The Exiles, who will face their old Cup Winners’ Cup rivals Carl Zeiss Jena at Spytty Park tomorrow (kick-off 2pm) had indicated that they were finished in their summer recruitment drive.
Edinburgh has swooped to sign Darren Jones, Kevin Feely, Mark Byrne and Yan Klukowski as well as retaining the core of his squad from last term, putting the Exiles close to their maximum wage budget for the coming campaign.
The former Tottenham man confirmed to Argus Sport last week that he didn’t anticipate any further transfer business this summer, but the Argus understands that is no longer the case.
Edinburgh wants to further strengthen his ranks and will look at player trades to do so with a couple of members of the current squad possibly set for the exit door.
It is understood there are already negotiations ongoing that could see one current member of Edinburgh’s squad departing for a local rival.
“We are pretty much at the limit on the wage budget, we have mentioned we were done, but perhaps now it’s safer to say we will wait and see what happens, there could be players to go out,” Edinburgh confirmed.
“If players leave it will free funds to bring others in and that’s definitely a possibility in the coming weeks, we have talks ongoing about certain players. And if the right person becomes available on the market, we will always try and strengthen. But for that to happen, people have to go out.”
However, Edinburgh is on balance happy with the group he has.
“I am very happy with the settled nature of the squad, we’ve got good continuity and a good shape and the main thing is, the squad seems a lot healthier than this time last season,” he said.
“That was unlike anything I’ve known in football and at times we were like fire fighters, as soon as one blaze went out, another started.
“This time we’ve got everything more in hand, pre-season is going well in terms of people remaining fit and the group feel fitter and stronger, which is the most important thing.”
