WALES will attempt to avoid a pair of banana skins at Ibrox today as they attempt to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games rugby sevens, writes Chris Kirwan.
Gareth Williams’ side are likely to take on Samoa for Group C top spot (kick-off 9.26pm) but before then they must safely deal with Malaysia (kick-off 12pm) and Papua New Guinea (kick-off 6.46pm).
Wales should make tomorrow’s last eight where they will be looking to cause an upset against either England or Australia, who are ranked fourth and fifth in the world respectively, but former Dragons flanker Jevon Groves has warned against complacency.
“Anyone can beat anyone in sevens and that means we cannot afford to take any side lightly, some of these teams don't play in regular tournaments and put everything into the Commonwealth Games,” he said.
“We've got Papua New Guinea and Malaysia and have to focus on them before it steps up against Samoa and the quarter-finals.
“Our target is to beat the top nations and we believe we have the ability to do that, but we need to make sure we put in the performances in the group games first.”
New Zealand are hot favourites for gold having won all four previous tournaments since sevens made its Games debut in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.
If Wales finish top of Group C then they will avoid being in the Kiwis half of the draw for Sunday action.
