THERE will be plenty of attacking talent on display at the Premiership Rugby 7s in the capital this evening but Newport Gwent Dragons hope to show a mean streak in their bid for finals day, writes Chris Kirwan.
The region will tussle with the Ospreys, Scarlets and hosts Cardiff Blues for two spots at the Twickenham Stoop on Friday, August 8.
The quartet will field a mixture of academy talent and threatening sevens specialists at Cardiff Arms Park.
The Dragons boast Wales internationals Rhys Jones, Sam Cross and Matthew Pewtner while elusive Newport wing Elliot Frewen, who has scored 30 tries in 66 appearances for the Black and Ambers, is certainly one to watch on the fast 3G surface.
But Cross Keys fly-half Dorian Jones, who played for Wales in an exhibition match against England after the Six Nations clash at Twickenham last season, has stressed the need for the Dragons to impress without the ball.
"How your defence performs in Sevens rugby is key," said the 21-year-old, who has a dual-contract with the Dragons and the Principality Premiership runners-up.
"If you can stop teams from scoring, defend well and keep the ball then you've got a chance.
"We've got the talent in our squad to reach the finals, but it's going to be about how we put it all together."
Dorian Jones featured three times for the Dragons last season – against London Wasps and Newcastle in the LV= Cup and Glasgow in the Pro12 – and wants to make an early impression ahead of the coming campaign.
Steffan Jones has signed for Bedford, leaving him battling with Wales Under-20s international Angus O'Brien to be back-up to Jason Tovey and Kris Burton.
"This is a great chance to get out there before everyone else and make a good impression," said Dorian Jones.
"A lot of the boys in our squad have signed their first professional contracts and it will mean a lot to put that Dragons jersey on. It's an opportunity that we have to make the most of."
- The Dragons are set to wear their new kitt - complete with BT Sport sponsorship - at the Arms Park this evening. The tournament will be televised on BT Sport as well as S4C.
