WELSH judoka Natalie Powell fulfilled a childhood dream by beating England’s Gemma Gibbons to win the 78kg gold medal at Glasgow 2014.

The 23-year-old from Merthyr became the second gold medallist for Team Wales after gymnast Frankie Jones on a fantastic day three of competition for the Welsh.

“I have been waiting for that fight for the last two years,” said Powell after beating London 2012 silver medallist Gibbons.

“I can't describe it. I've been wanting this since I was eight; I've always wanted to compete in the Commonwealth Games.

Powell added: "I'm chuffed I've beaten Gemma. I knew I could beat her but she never backs down.

“There were a lot of people who put me second to her. I knew I wasn't and today I proved that.”

Gibbons said: "The silver is not what I came for and not what I wanted. I am not happy.

“There are no specific injuries holding me back but I'm not 100 per cent and I knew that coming into the Games.

“I know I can still be the best in the country and the best in the world. I'm a fighter and I thought I would be the best person today, and I still believe I am."

And the medals kept on coming for Team Wales as Jack Thomas won bronze in the para-swimming 200m freestyle.

Thomas' success left the Welsh eighth in the medal table with 15 in total; two golds, six silvers and seven bronze medals.
