ST JOSEPH’S boxer Joe Cordina is just one win away from a medal after his second victory in two days at Glasgow 2014.
The 60kg fighter from Cardiff, who trains with Tony Borg at St Joes in Newport, floored David Gauthier in the first round on his way to a unanimous decision win.
Cordina won all three rounds at the SECC on Sunday to progress to the last eight and he just needs to win his quarter-final to be guaranteed at least a bronze medal.
“David beat me 10 weeks ago so it was important to me to get my revenge over him and I achieved that,” said the 22-year-old.
“I put him down after 23 seconds but that wasn't really part of my script.
“It meant I could take control from an early stage but I kept to my game plan, staying behind my jab, and it worked.
“I am one fight away from a medal now and things are going the way I would have liked. It's not just me carrying my country's hopes in the ring but I'm doing my part."
Fellow Welshman Zack Davies beat Nigeria's Waheed Shogbamu, also via a unanimous decision, to progress to the last eight of the light-welterweight (64kg) division.
