TO SOME the Premiership Rugby 7s is merely a low-key warm-up before the start of the proper season but for Elliot Frewen the tournament is a major opportunity.
The Newport winger represented the Dragons at BT Sport Arms Park on Saturday and grasped his chance to impress.
He scored two tries in the Welsh leg – a magic late winner against the Scarlets when he beat four tacklers and a terrific team try against the Ospreys – and is desperate to get the nod to feature at finals day at the Twickenham Stoop on Friday, August 8.
The 27-year-old from Pencoed has become a firm favourite with the Black and Ambers with a strike rate of 30 tries in 66 appearances and a penchant for the spectacular score.
And a call-up to the region's sevens squad has presented Frewen with a chance to put himself in the mix if Newport Gwent Dragons need cover on the wing.
"It means the world for me to wear the Dragons jersey," said Frewen, who reset a dislocated thumb himself before playing on in the capital. "I wore one for the Gwent Premiership Select XV but Saturday was the first time proper.
"Some of the boys get to wear it day in, day out but for me it was massive. It was a big opportunity for me and I really wanted to try and make the most of it. I hope I impressed."
Frewen works for Y Bont, a Bridgend charity that provides a place for disabled children to learn and play as well as supporting their families, along with being a retained firefighter.
He has not played for Newport since December after suffering a broken ankle against Cardiff in the Principality Premiership but, encouragingly for the Black and Ambers, showed signs of being back to his best at the Arms Park.
He helped the Dragons finish second in the group and they would have headed to the home of Harlequins as Welsh winners were it not for a last-gasp penalty try that enabled Cardiff Blues to sneak a draw.
"I loved it on Saturday," he said. "I was gutted about the result and disappointed with the way that it ended because it's about the winning as well as the taking part.
"But we got through and that's what we went there to do. Considering that we only had two training sessions together we gelled pretty well and I'd love to be part of finals day."
