I FINALLY made it to Hampden Park for the athletics yesterday, 16 months after what should have been my first visit.

The venue has been transformed for the Commonwealth Games with the athletics track sitting on top of the football pitch.

My Argus Sport colleague Michael Pearlman and I tried and failed to get to Scotland’s national stadium to see a World Cup qualifier on a Friday night in March 2013.

We stayed overnight in York on the Thursday night where Newport County AFC had been due to play Gateshead in the Conference.

That match was postponed, as I’m sure Exiles fans will remember, so on we went to Scotland on the Friday morning only to be stopped in our tracks by snow blocking the roads north of the border.

Finally accepting our fate we turned back, missing a wonderful Welsh win and leaving our hotel rooms unused.

And with County in action at Stockport the next day we stopped at a Premier Inn somewhere in Greater Manchester – three days on the road and three hotels for a 1-0 loss to Stockport United, thanks to a Lee Minshull own goal!

After freaky Friday with the Rhys Williams drugs story and Andrew Selby’s shock defeat and super Saturday with 11 medals for Team Wales, most of us were glad of a more sedate Sunday.

Things got so hectic trying to cover the medal rush on Saturday afternoon that at one point I tried to go up a down escalator not once but twice.

Thankfully I just about managed to retain my balance, if not my dignity.

The Scottish media have been going wild over cyclist Chris Pritchard’s proposal to his girlfriend in the velodrome on Sunday.

Not so the Australian media who were less than impressed that their man Matthew Glaetzer had to wait to start his keirin final.

It ended happily for both, however, with Pritchard heading to the altar and Glaetzer winning gold.

"I saw the guy bent down and holding, I assumed, his partner's hand. I thought 'wow, it could be a proposal going on'," Glaetzer said.

"We were waiting for the gold medal ride and all of a sudden there's this commotion going on in the stands.

"It's been a great night for that man, and myself."
