THE Welsh women’s netball and hockey teams conclude their campaigns at Glasgow 2014 with plenty of positives from their Commonwealth Games experience, writes Andrew Penman.

They won’t be taking any medals home with them but both teams have performed admirably against higher-ranked teams, some of them full-time professionals.

Netball star Cara Lea Moseley from Pontllanfraith won her 50th cap in Tuesday’s 61-41 defeat to South Africa.

That was Wales’ fifth and final group game after defeats to England and Australia and wins over Trinidad & Tobago and Bardbados.

Their final match will be the 7th/8th play-off tomorrow morning and Moseley, daughter of former Wales rugby international Kevin, has mixed feelings on the tournament.

“It’s a difficult one,” she said. “Obviously we didn’t get the results that we wanted but performance-wise there have been some really good aspects of our play.

“We’ve kept up with the best with the world and it’s just a shame that we couldn’t put four quarters together, which is what you need to do to win.

“We lacked that consistency so it’s disappointing but we’ll take the positives from it going into the world cup next year and we’ve still got one game left.

“We’re in the 7th/8th play-off and we’re ranked eighth so we want to make sure we finish as high as possible.”

Off the court, however, Moseley gives a big thumbs up to the Glasgow 2014 experience.

“It has lived up to expectations. It’s a smaller tournament than we’re sued to with only ten teams but the atmosphere is amazing,” said the 27-year-old goal attack.

“And the whole experience around the village with other athletes from other sports has been brilliant and everything I expected it to be.

“We missed out on meeting William, Kate and Harry but I did see Prince Edward and Usain Bolt as well.”

The hockey women, including Newport pair Abi Welsford and Sophie Clayton and Croesyceiliog School pupil Danielle Jordan, play their 9th/10th play-off tonight against Trinidad & Tobago.

They have lost three and drawn one and have yet to score a goal after yesterday’s 0-0 draw with Malaysia.

“We couldn't get there in the end,” said Welsford after the draw meant they missed out on their target of the 7th/8th play-off.

“We had quite a few tough games against opposition ranked higher than us but we’ll hopefully get a result and go out on a high.”
