TALENTED teenager Georgina Hockenhull has won the tenth gymnastics medal for Team Wales at Glasgow 2014 with bronze in the women’s individual beam, writes Andrew Penman.
The 16-year-old, who won team bronze in the artistic gymnastics earlier in the week, followed in the footsteps of the Welsh rhythmic gymnasts who claimed eight medals last week.
Canada’s Ellie Black won gold on the beam with a stunning routine of 14.900 ahead of Australia’s Mary Anne Monckton in silver while Hockenhull was third with fellow Welsh girl Lizzie Beddoe fourth.
England’s Becky Downie, who won uneven bars gold on Thursday, was first on the beam but came off the apparatus twice to score a modest 9.833 after a tentative performance.
Australian duo Monckton and Lauren Mitchell moved ahead with scores in the 13-point range before the stage was set for England’s newest - and youngest - gymnastics star, 16-year-old Fragapane.
The diminutive 4ft 5in gymnast, who has won all-around, vault and team gold already at the Games, scored 13.133 to move into the silver medal position.
Mitchell lodged an inquiry into her score but that was rejected and she slipped into third, but Fragapane’s hold on second place did not last long as Wales’ Beddoe moved ahead with 13.366.
Hockenhull then took her place in silver medal position above her team-mate with a marginally better score.
Black was the last to perform and the best was saved until last as she blew away the competition by more than a mark to claim gold, which meant Fragapane finished in fifth.
“It's so amazing. I can't really believe it. I'm speechless really,” said Hockenhull after claiming her medal on the podium.
“I just wanted to enjoy it and go clean so to have a medal is amazing.
“I have practised it so many times, so I knew I could do it. I just had to relax and do what I know."
“I wasn’t disappointed to miss out on silver,” she added. “I didn't even expect to get a medal so to get bronze is amazing.”
