WELSH squash pair David Evans and Peter Creed missed out a semi-final spot at Glasgow 2014 after being beaten by England, writes Andrew Penman.

Evans, of Pontypool, and Caerphilly man Creed were ranked tenth as a pair coming into the Commonwealth Games and they couldn’t match the number one seeds Nick Matthew and Adrian Grant.

The English pair won their quarter-final clash 11-9, 11-4 at the Scotstoun Sports Campus.

“To be honest they're just two solid, solid players, who just tried to contain us and keep us away from attacking in front of the court,” said Evans.

“And it's always a fight to see who can get to front of the court first. They just kept it very tight and played solid squash.

"As bitterly disappointed as we are, to put my coach's hat on we've got to be proud of ourselves, we beat the No.7 seeds, the No.9 seeds and it's the best we've done.

“Obviously we are both winners but we've given it the best we could. And that's all we can ask for.

“That's our tournament over,” he added. “Peter is on the professional circuit so he'll be getting ready for his next singles tournament to get his world ranking up."

Creed said: “It was nice for the schedule to put us on the glass court.

“Our quarter-final is the first time in the glass. It would have been nice to have a pool match in there, just to get used to it.

“You see the boys they've played in the glass the whole week and not taking anything away we did the best we could.

"We had a bit more run of play in the previous matches, once the luck is on your side everything seems to be working.

“But when you're chasing the game it's just so hard in doubles. You're not just trying to make up for yourself, but also for your partner."
