GWENT netball international Cara Lea Moseley says Wales can bounce back from a disappointing Glasgow 2014 campaign as they target world cup success next year, writes Andrew Penman.
The Welsh netballers were beaten 58-36 by Northern Ireland in their 7th-place play-off yesterday to end their Commonwealth Games on a downbeat note.
Pontllanfraith goal attack Moseley says the team, ranked eighth coming into the tournament, is not happy to finish eighth and they will aim to break into the world’s top five by next year.
“It was a really disappointing way for it to end,” said the 27-year-old daughter of former Wales rugby star Kevin.
“That was nowhere near the performance that we’re capable of. We made too many errors and we didn’t convert our chances.
“We now that we’re much better than an eighth ranked team. We’re pushing hard to break into that top five.
“We know that we we’re a better team than we showed today but they played very well.”
Despite the disappointment, Moseley insists that she has enjoyed the Glasgow 2014 experience and she can’t wait for the world cup next year in Sydney, Australia.
“It’s been amazing,” she added. “All of the girls have worked so hard for this. We came back for pre-season in July last year so it’s been 13 months now.
“It’s been very tough but it’s been everything we wanted it to be tournament-wise.
“We travel back on Monday morning so we’re looking to enjoy the last few days now and the closing ceremony now.
“The opening ceremony was amazing,” she added. “We queued for two hours to walk in as a team but it was electric as soon as we went in and we all said we felt like we were drunk in there.
“The support we’ve had has been brilliant. We’ve had a lot of people driving up from Wales and camping here and we’re very grateful for that.
“People have been watching on their iPads under their desks at work back home as well so I’m told so it’s great for the sport.”
Next week Moseley will enjoy a hard-earned holiday before she’s back to training for the world cup.
“The world cup is next August so we’re back into training in September for that, which will fly by,” she said. “But first I’m going on holiday!”
The women’s hockey team, including Newport pair Abi Welsford and Sophie Clayton and Croesyceiliog School pupil Danielle Jordan, beat Trinidad & Tobago 4-0 to secure a ninth-place finish.
