IT is nice to be writing this column after one of the best results we’ve had all season, our 2-1 win at Adams Park last weekend against Wycombe Wanderers.
I’m not sure if you could say it is our best result of the season. That is still probably Portsmouth away as we’d been on a losing run and the pressure was mounting on us, but it’s on a par.
It is very easy to get on a bad run and it’s a damn sight harder to stop the rot and we are delighted to have done that at a very hard place to go in Wycombe who have been in fantastic form.
I was delighted especially for Jimmy Dack and Wayne Hatswell, it was just reward for the hard work they’ve put in and the way they’ve been with us, the way they conduct themselves, they have been absolutely first rate.
I think the way the lads responded against Tranmere and Wycombe shows the support they’ve got, all the lads are fully behind Jimmy and Wayne and I’m not sure the speculation about Justin Edinburgh’s future affected me that badly, personally.
We can’t blame that, it’s an excuse, we came off what we’ve been doing well and had a couple of bad results, it does happen.
But we are all moving on, Justin is gone and we are focusing on the club and our own careers.
A lot of the boys are still looking to impress to earn a contract at the end of the season, it is very few of us not in that boat and we want to shine, to earn a deal here or somewhere else.
The lads have an awful lot to play for and while we wish Justin the best and miss him, we’ve moved on completely, we are now all about Jimmy and Hats.
I actually forgot that the thing with a manager leaving does become a giant pain for the players, it was old hat to me, but I’m sure some of the younger players found it a tough time.
I actually forgot that at Bradford I had seven managers in three years, it’s not good when the turnover is like that and that’s why the boys might have had muddled heads for a little while.
But this club continues to make giant strides forward. Compared to when I left the first time the club is unrecognisable, with the move at Rodney Parade being the key piece of the puzzle for us.
We are competing in the Football League and so much has happened recently, all the good work is being continued and the players buy into the ideas of Jimmy and Wayne and everyone is giving 100% effort.
We have a few Newport lads here and we wouldn’t let anyone get away with any less.
In terms of the win on Saturday, I’ve got to give big respect to Yan Klukowski, or Frank Yanpard, as he’ll soon be known.
I’ve got quite close with Yan since he joined and I was delighted for him on Saturday, getting two goals.
I would love to be getting more game time myself – I hope you haven’t forgotten who got our winner at Wycombe last season – but Yan has waited so patiently, not just for a chance here but in the Football League in general.
There is no-one in the squad who isn’t made up for him, you could see how much the two goals meant to him and there is no better feeling than scoring in a winning performance.
Hopefully he can keep scoring a few more goals because he’s a natural finisher.
From my own perspective, I want to be playing, but Jimmy picks the team and I have to be patient and look ahead, as I have always done throughout my career.
We’ve had a week of real success in the academy, with our youth team beating Reading U16s in midweek and Aaron Collins continuing to prove he’s a menace in front of goal, bagging five of our six goals in a 6-1 win.
However, the good news didn’t stop there with Regan Poole playing twice for Wales U17s in midweek.
I got to watch the first game and I was really impressed, he looked exceptionally comfortable at that level and at the end of the day, international football is a giant step up.
