STRIKER Miles Storey says Saturday’s home clash with Dagenham & Redbridge is the biggest game of the season for Newport County AFC.
The 21-year-old, on loan from Swindon Town until the end of the season, knows it is a must-win match if the Exiles are to keep their League Two play-off hopes alive.
Storey admits that recent displays, which have seen County slip to three successive defeats and ninth in the table, have not been up to scratch.
And he says the players are more frustrated than anyone but, with three games left and nine points still to play for, they won’t give up the fight yet.
“It’s a massive disappointment. We’ve slipped up and there’s no other words for it,” said Storey after Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at Southend United.
“I think we needed to come here and win to put pressure on the other teams.
“I’m not saying it’s not possible but I think everybody knows that we’ve slipped up and it could come back to hurt us.
“I don’t think we ever really got going and I don’t think we looked like scoring.
“When you’ve had a couple of losses it can affect you in your next game,” he added.
“I think you could see it in the performance; we looked a bit more panicky on the ball and never really used the ball well.”
It means that the Exiles probably need three wins from their last three games, starting against Dagenham on Saturday.
“We know what we need to do. We need maximum points,” said Storey.
“We could get maximum points and get nowhere near it still but anything can happen in this league.
“I think there’s enough quality in the team that if we turn it on and get some momentum going again there’s no reason why we can’t get the three wins and see where that takes us.
“I can’t really put my finger on it but we just need to get back to how we were.
“I’ve seen some great performances here and I can’t see why we can’t get back to that.
“I know it’s tough but we need to try to move on; we can’t keep on thinking it’s doom and gloom.
“We need to put it behind us and focus on Saturday because that is our biggest game of the season now.
“A couple of teams in the play-offs could lose and all of a sudden you’re back in there.
“That’s League Two; other than Burton and Shrewsbury, who have been very consistent, anybody can beat anyone. It’s still possible.”
