BEDWAS and Cardiff clash this weekend with the aim of putting themselves in pole position to profit from any slip-ups in the race for the Principality Premiership playoffs, writes Chris Kirwan.
The men from Bridge Field gave themselves a chance of extending their season with a stunning bonus point win at Ebbw Vale a fortnight ago but the Steelmen are on the brink of a top-three spot thanks to their success at Llandovery last weekend.
With two games left Bedwas and Cardiff are six points back on Cross Keys, who have a game in hand and a pair of fixtures against strugglers Bridgend, and nine behind Ebbw.
Next Saturday's home encounter with Neath is likely to be their last of 2014/15 but head coach Steve Law wants his charges to finish another fine campaign strongly.
"We are playing really well at the moment and have developed as a team throughout the season," said Law, whose team finished sixth last year and fourth in 2013.
"Sometimes you can't put your finger on it because the boys have worked hard all year but things seem to have clicked, albeit a little bit too late.
"It would take some drastic for us to make the playoffs but it's been a positive season and we would like to finish off well and climb as high as we can in the table."
The Blue and Blacks have the slight advantage in that if Ebbw Vale slip up at Llanelli then they host the Steelmen in the capital next Friday.
"Cardiff are above us in the table (courtesy of 11 wins to 10) and are a good side with good players," said Law.
"They are probably disappointed that they are in the same boat as us just outside the playoffs and I expect a high quality game.
"We lost down there (22-20) when we really should have won but deserving to win doesn't count for much."
Bedwas back row forward Dan Crimmins has been banned for six weeks for his red card for foul language when questioning a decision by referee Rhys Thomas in the Swalec Cup quarter-final defeat to Cross Keys.
