NEWPORT finished a disappointing season on a high after battering Aberavon on their way to a bonus point victory in the final match of their 2014/15 campaign.
Although they finish bottom of the Principality Premiership, the hosts showed a glimpse of possible far happier times ahead under new head coach Craig Warlow.
It was an emotional day for two local loyal servants, loosehead prop Dai Pattison and lock and back row forward Adam Frampton, who both bid the club farewell.
The 35-year-old Pattison is retiring after 333 games for the Black and Ambers during a 14-year career, while Frampton, who made his 165th appearance, is moving to London where he will play for Rosslyn Park.
It was also announced at the interval that two other popular players are also retiring, back rower Sam Waldron and wing Owen Broad coming on to the Rodney Parade turf to wave their goodbyes.
Led by openside Ollie Griffiths, who came on as a second half replacement for the Newport Gwent Dragons in their 29-10 defeat to the Scarlets at the Millennium Stadium the day before, the hosts took the lead in the 12th minute when their No 10 Geraint O'Driscoll slotted over a penalty.
And the fly half burst through for a try which he converted to give them a 10-0 lead as the first quarter came to a close.
The Wizards tried to hit back and they put the home side under enormous pressure, turning down shots at goal as they hunted tries.
Their plan backfired however and they left empty-handed when Newport broke away, only for them to make the wrong decision of going for a driving lineout instead of taking three points.
Soon after though, their powerful tighthead prop Alex Jeffries showed a lovely turn of speed to cross for try just before half-time, O'Driscoll's fine conversion stretching his side's lead to 17-0.
It only took them a few minutes of the second half to strike again when full back Llywarch ap Myrddin finished in style for an unconverted try after an offload by the impressive Griffiths.
Aberavon's woes were compounded when their No 8 Joe Tomalin-Reeves was yellow carded.
Crowd favourite, wing Elliot Frewen pounced on a bouncing ball from a chip ahead to get the bonus point try, O'Driscoll's conversion bringing up his 500th Premiership point for the club.
Centre Will Price crossed for an unconverted Aberavon try with a quarter of an hour to go as the visitors looked to regain some pride.
Skipper Griffiths completed the rout with Newport's fifth try in the last minute.
