NEWPORT ex-pat Brandon Tutton is celebrating after claiming a silver medal as he represented Great Britain in the World Jiu-Jitsu Children’s Cup in Abu Dhabi.
More than 900 competitors aged between ten and 15 took to the mat on a day where 54 weight divisions were contested at Abu Dhabi’s IPIC Arena last week.
And 12-year-old Tutton, originally from Ringland but now living in Dubai, finished second to 13-year-old Khalifa Ahmed of the UAE in the 50.5kg yellow junior division.
Proud dad Shaun, who moved the family to the Middle East for work, two years ago said: “This is a massive achievement for such a young sportsman.
“Brandon’s love of martial arts started at the age of five this is when he took up the art of judo, winning many fight and tournaments.
“His best achievements were when he won the British open at under-35kg at the age of nine, also gaining silver in Welsh Championships.”
He added: “When moving to Dubai two years ago his love for Brazilian Ju Jitsu started, as this is a similar sport to judo but a lot more ground fighting is involved.
“What's makes him so driven in his sport he says is his love for his granddad Sidney William Tutton, who sadly passed away in 2010 from cancer.”
