NEW manager Terry Butcher believes Newport County AFC can enjoy the same sort of success he inspired at Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Premier League.
The former England captain helped the Scottish minnows to compete with SPL giants Celtic on a budget smaller than he will work with at County next season.
And Butcher, who took Exiles captain Gary Warren to Inverness in 2012, told today’s press conference at Rodney Parade that he sees big similarities between the two clubs.
“I'm delighted to be here,” said Butcher. “The challenge excites me and there are similarities with Inverness.
“I want to build up Newport County AFC like I did there.
“I spoke to Gary Warren and he was very complimentary about Newport,” he added. “I don't think we can afford his transfer fee to bring him back sadly!”
Not that Butcher is concerned about a reduced budget for the Exiles in 2015/16.
“I had a slightly smaller budget at Inverness and it's about quality not how much money you've got,” he said.
“There could be lots of transfer activity. I once signed seven players in one day at Inverness!
“Who knows where this club can go,” he added. “I'm not starting from the bottom; this is a club that's had great success and a good season.
“The teams that I've built usually do very well. My teams work hard. At Inverness it was steel and style.
“I'm not going to set targets. We want to get off to a good start and build from there.
“Pre-season is so important for team bonding and getting the right structure and philosophy in place. The work starts today.
“But I'm not worried about a hangover from missing out on the play-offs. It's a new start.
“It's a fresh outlook and sometimes you have to strip it right back and start again.”
Butcher says talks on his coaching team have not yet been completed but he confirmed that he will be moving to south Wales.
“Me, my wife Rita and my dog will move here to get a feel for the club and be part of it,” he said. “It's a long commute from Suffolk!”
