DANIEL Wilkinson smashed a century as Blackwood responded to a league disappointment by beating Malpas in round one of the Welsh Cup.
Blackwood had lost their top spot in Division One of the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League after being edged out by Abergavenny on Saturday.
However, they bounced back and Wilkinson led the way, the Yorkshireman smashing 151 off 103 balls in a total of 277.
Malpas were then bowled out for 175 with Andrew Clark taking 4-8 while Michael Fussell top-scored with 41.
There was a thriller at Panteg where Usk sneaked a one-run victory in a tense battle, the hosts ending on 161-9 in pursuit of 163.
Panteg had looked good until a spell by left-arm spinner Pat Rodden, who took three cheap wickets to put the game in the balance.
He secured a five-wicket haul in his final over before a dramatic finale that saw Panteg suffering a run-out going for a third run from the final delivery that would have tied the scores.
Sudbrook romped to a 10-wicket win against Newport, who have won four in a row in South Wales Premier League One.
The hosts were dismissed for just 151 at Spytty Park and Sudbrook chased it down without loss in the 31st over.
Newbridge, who overtook Blackwood as leaders of the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire league by beating Pontypridd for a sixth successive win on the Saturday, enjoyed a 63-run win against Chepstow.
‘Bridge wicket-keeper Elliot Jenkins led the way with the bat, striking 72 as they were bowled out for 193 before Chepstow were dismissed for 130.
The second round is set to be played on Sunday, June 28 as teams attempt to earn a spot in the final at the Gnoll in Neath on Sunday, August 23.
