NEWPORT County AFC could face a reunion with former manager Justin Edinburgh or a local derby with Cardiff City in the first round of the Capital One Cup, writes Andrew Penman.
The draw takes place at 10am on Tuesday with the seeded teams to be split into two regional groups (based predominantly on a ‘north’ and ‘south’ split), and drawn against an unseeded team from the equivalent pot on a random home or away basis.
County are amongst the unseeded teams in the southern part of the draw and that means they could face Edinburgh’s Gillingham or the Bluebirds.
Terry Butcher’s men could also face a Severnside derby with Bristol City, a reunion with former striker Conor Washington at Peterborough United or repeat clashes with Reading or Brighton & Hove Albion.
Under previous boss Edinburgh, who departed for the Gills in February this year, County were beaten 3-1 at the Madejski Stadium in August last year.
But 12 months earlier they caused a shock with a stunning 3-1 win at Championship Brighton before bowing out to Premier League West Bromwich Albion.
Other possible opponents for the Exiles this time round include Brentford, Charlton Athletic, Fulham, Ipswich Town, Millwall, MK Dons, QPR or Swindon Town.
First round ties will be played during the week starting August 10, after the first round of Football League fixtures on August 8.
The League Two fixtures will be announced on Wednesday morning.
