MATTHEW Maynard admits it will be a strange experience returning to Glamorgan as Somerset's director of cricket for tomorrow's NatWest T20 Blast South Group clash (2.30pm start).
But the man who led the Welsh club to the County Championship title in 1997 during a 20-year playing career with them and later became their director of cricket insists his thoughts will be firmly on plotting an away victory.
Maynard said: "It is going to be strange. I don't think I have even watched a game at Cardiff since I finished as Glamorgan coach in 2010.
"Obviously there are some strong ties. I hope Mark Wallace makes some runs in the game because I worked with him for so long – but not too many!
"All my focus is on Somerset winning. I have bought a house there, which shows my commitment to my current job and we need a victory because Glamorgan pose a strong threat in the group.
"Any side boasting the likes of Jacques Rudolph, Chris Cooke, Wayne Parnell and Michael Hogan is bound to be dangerous and we will need to be at our best to take the points."
Maynard will be particularly interested in the form of all-rounder Craig Meschede, who is having an excellent season with Glamorgan on loan from Somerset.
"Craig has taken his opportunity to play regular first team cricket and we are delighted for him," he said.
"I still regard him as a big player in Somerset's future and the obvious successor to Peter Trego some day.
"We couldn't guarantee him a regular first team place this summer, but he has another year on his contract with us and I shall be sitting down with him at the end of the season to discuss the future."
Today's game also means a return to Glamorgan for Jim Allenby, who moved to Somerset for the start of this season after six years with the Welsh county.
But there will be a mixture of disappointment and relief among Glamorgan followers that Chris Gayle has left Somerset one game earlier than expected after some mighty performances with the bat.
