GLASGOW 2014 silver medalist Sally Peake, former European champion Rhys Williams and London 2012 Olympian Brett Morse will be among the stars in action at this weekend’s Welsh Senior Championships in Cardiff.
Newport sprint star Mica Moore also competes in the 100m and 200m against her Commonwealth Games 4x100m relay teammates Hannah Brier and Hannah Thomas.
Fresh from a season’s best performance at the European Team Championships in Cheboksary in Russia last Saturday, Peake will be part of an exciting women’s pole vault competition on Sunday from 12pm.
In the men’s 400m hurdles (heats 2.32pm Saturday) 2012 European champion Williams will continue his quest for a qualifying time for the World Championships in Beijing in August.
Two-time Commonwealth Games finalist and Welsh record holder Morse is another chasing a World Championships qualifying standard having recovered from the injury which forced him to withdraw from the GB & NI team for the European Team Championships.
Moore, Brier and Thomas, three of the four sprinters who set a new women’s 4x100m Welsh record in Glasgow last summer, will be head-to-head in the 100m heats at 1.58pm on Saturday and the 200m heats at 3.40pm on Sunday.
Rachel Johncock, the fourth member of last year’s relay squad, is unable to attend this weekend, as are Dai Greene, Gareth Warburton, David Omoregie and Seren Bundy-Davies.
Scott Simpson, Welsh Athletics head of performance, said: “The Welsh Senior Championships provide an exciting opportunity for our athletes to compete in front of a passionate home crowd in one of our biggest track and field events of the year.
“In a non-Commonwealth Games year it is understandable some of our senior athletes are unable to attend as they focus on the following weekend’s UK Championships and qualification for the European U23 Championships and the senior World Championships later this year.
“This gives some of our up-and-coming talent the chance to make a name for themselves and is great to see so many talented young athletes, such as Hannah Brier, Adele Nicoll and Jac Palmer, coming through the ranks and continuing to support the Welsh Championships.”
The competition gets under way at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium in Leckwith at 11am on Saturday and Sunday and will finish after 5pm on both days.
As well as the senior championships the event also includes the under-17s championships and also features youngsters in the under-13s age group.
