GLAMORGAN kept the heat on Surrey in the LV= County Championship promotion race by recording their fourth successive win of the season against Leicestershire in Cardiff.
The Welsh county bowled out the Foxes for 186 for a 137-run win at the Swalec Stadium, retaining their unbeaten record and closing to within 11 points of second-placed Surrey with a game in hand.
It is only the ninth time that Glamorgan have won four games on the spin with the last occasion coming in 2004 when Leicestershire were once again the victims.
They didn’t have things all their own way over the four days but captain Jacques Rudolph hailed his side’s fighting spirit.
"It was another good win for us in the way we played our cricket,” he said.
"We had our backs against the wall at certain stages in the game and we managed to fight our way out of it.
"We're not relying on one or two people to get us over the line, everybody's been chipping in and the attitudes have been spot-on.
"I think it's very important when you get on a run like this to stick to the basics and stick to what we've been doing."
The Foxes started day four with slim hopes of recording a second away victory of the season with 289 runs needed and seven wickets remaining.
Within half an hour Glamorgan were closing in on success thanks to off spinner Andrew Salter bowling nightwatchman Jigar Naik for six in the second over of the day and Michael Hogan having Andrea Agathangelou caught behind by Mark Wallace, also for six.
There was some resistance from Matthew Boyce and Niall O’Brien, who put on 52 in 16.3 overs for the sixth wicket before Boyce, pushing forward to Colin Ingram’s leg spin, was caught by Chris Cooke at bat-pad.
It was the opener’s second fifty of the game and had his teammates shown the same application and patience, Leicestershire might have taken the game into the final session.
Tom Wells was the next to go when he played on to Graham Wagg – one of several batsmen to be dismissed in similar fashion on a slow pitch – while Ben Raine perished after lunch playing down the wrong line to Craig Meschede.
On-loan Nottinghamshire pace bowler Andy Carter wrapped up the win with his first over of the day, Wallace catching opposite number O’Brien for 41 before Charlie Shreck was trapped leg before for a duck.
