NEWPORT Gwent Dragons are set to move into the transfer market for a tighthead prop after Dan Way was forced to retire because of a shoulder injury.
The 28-year-old from Swindon was contracted at Rodney Parade until 2017 but has accepted the advice of specialists to hang up his boots.
The blow will lead to the Dragons' management team of Lyn and Kingsley Jones bringing in a new tighthead as they are down to their their last two senior No 3s – Brok Harris and Lloyd Fairbrother.
Way earned a chance with the Dragons in 2010 after catching the eye in the Principality Premiership with Pontypool and Newport.
The former personal trainer was given a baptism of fire on his first start against Northampton's powerhouse loosehead Soane Tonga'uiha but went on to earn a professional deal.
Way, who qualified for Wales on residency grounds, played 105 times for the Dragons with his last appearance coming at Murrayfield in the European Rugby Challenge Cup semi-final loss to Edinburgh.
He said: "I'm grateful for the opportunity and the experiences I have been given during my time at the region as it's something that not many people get to do.
"I would like to thank my family and friends as well as the Dragons staff who have given me great support throughout this difficult time.
"I also want to thank all of the loyal fans that have made Rodney Parade such a fantastic place to play at.
"This year the squad are looking really promising especially looking at the youngsters coming through. I wish everyone involved at the Dragons the very best and a good season."
Harris proved to be a huge hit after arriving from the Stormers last season while Welsh-qualified Fairbrother, young in propping years at 23, had his moments after arriving from Exeter.
They are backed up by a pair of Wales Under-20s internationals in Alex Jeffries and Leon Brown but another more experienced option is needed following the early departure of David Young.
He was allowed to join London Scottish earlier in the summer after an underwhelming season in which he made just three appearances as a replacement.
