TELL me, have Welsh sport fans ever had it as good as they do now?
We truly are in a golden age for Welsh sport, with event after event on the horizon that does plenty to show the dramatic change in the sporting landscape over recent years.
Wales have it all to look forward to with the rugby, the Millennium Stadium a key component of the next World Cup and Warren Gatland’s men no longer unreliable underachievers on the biggest stage, but beaten semi-finalists from last time out.
Yes they have been hoisted by their own petard in regard to having a tougher group than need be, just to squeeze in one financially lucrative friendly, but Welsh fans will surely still be confident they can enjoy another impressive tournament.
The hope is the same for the Welsh national football team, potentially on the way to qualifying for the European Championships next summer.
Welsh sport hasn’t had a major football final on the horizon for over fifty years and the excitement levels are on set to increase in the coming months.
Of course, Welsh talisman Gareth Bale could also be set for another appearance in Cardiff at the 2017 Champions League final, the world’s most expensive footballer surely already targeting what would be his boyhood dream come true of winning the European Cup in his home city.
Not only do we have all that around the corner, but you can bet big time boxing will be heading back to Cardiff sooner rather than later as well.
Newport-based fighter Lee Selby is now a genuine world champion and a super fight at the Millennium Stadium is highly likely for next year.
And in the meantime? We just have the little matter of the first Ashes Test to await as England and Australia duke it out in Cardiff from tomorrow.
All indications are that the pitch is set fair for what could be another nail-biting five days of action, with England looking to defy the odds and get off to a positive start.
Don’t bet against another tense day five finish, akin to Jimmy Anderson and Monty Panesar’s last wicket stand, because there is less to choose between these sides than most think.
If Anderson and Broad fire at the Swalec, don’t bet against the shock of all shocks, an England victory.
However, Welsh sport fans are winning, whatever the outcome in the cricket.
