IT WOULD be an almighty punt on a player who hasn’t exactly been screaming “Football League,” in recent seasons, but I can’t help thinking about one former Exile with Newport’s current predicament.
After a contest against Morecambe where County were utterly dominant and entirely lacking a killer instinct in front of goal, a player who comes alive in the penalty area, the mind couldn’t help but wonder about a guy who plundered over 50 goals for the amber army in no time at all.
I’m talking, of course, about Craig Reid.
If you’re not an avid follower of former players, after leaving the Exiles for Stevenage, Reid has subsequently had spells at Aldershot and Kidderminster Harriers.
With County’s former rivals (and bogey side before Morecambe) Kidderminster in financial troubles, Reid was released at the start of September. As a free agent, he can sign for anyone at any time.
Obviously County can’t offer Reid big wages, but they can offer him a chance to rekindle his career (he’s still only 29) and there would be question marks about a player who primarily scored his goals for the club in the sixth tier of English football.
But Reid is an out and out goalscorer, an archetypal ‘fox in the box’ and Newport are crying out for such a player.
Would Reid be such a ridiculous punt? I honestly don’t think so.
Perhaps a face from the past could help to fire Newport to a brighter future.
One final point on the weekend, Tony Pulis, the man who actually tells it like it is.
His player, Callum McManaman dived at the weekend, so Pulis said so. He’s actually trying to help referees and make the game more honest. How utterly refreshing.
What a shame there aren’t more like Pulis.
