ABERGAVENNY Town became the first Gwent club for over two decades to win a national competition by lifting the FAW Trophy, plus a cheque for £5,000, thanks to a 1-0 win over Sully Sports at Dragon Park, Newport.
Local football has had nothing to celebrate since skipper Jimmy Blackie led Cwmbran Town to the inaugural League of Wales (now Welsh Premier League) title in 1992-1993.
By coincidence, Blackie is now manager of Sully Sports and he could only watch on in frustration as a second-minute goal from Craig Norman secured the victory for Welsh League debutants Abergavenny - who are well placed to gain promotion from Division Three.
After Norman's effort, he and Dan Jenkins went close to adding to it before the break in front of nearly 400 spectators at the well-equipped venue while Jenkins nearly doubled the lead during the second period.
His side were forced to hold off a firm challenge from their South Wales Alliance League opponents before they were able to emulate now-defunct Abergavenny Thursday's win of 1990-1991, when it was known as the FAW Intermediate Cup.
Abergavenny, who were only formed in June, 2014 and were last season's beaten semi finalists, now return to their day job of attempting to earn Division Two status with a home game against Cwm Welfare at their Pen-Y-Pound Stadium home on Wednesday.
