BOSS Warren Feeney said no-one could question the character his Newport County AFC side showed after twice coming from behind to earn a point at home to Cheltenham Town.
But he again lamented the Exiles’ knack of giving opposition teams head starts and described the hosts’ defending for Cheltenham’s second goal as “schoolboy football”.
Jon Parkin cancelled out Asa Hall’s strike and then a Danny Wright penalty as County recorded their third Sky Bet League Two draw in a row.
“For a neutral, it was a great game, but from our point of view, I’m disappointed we didn’t win it,” said Feeney after the 2-2 draw at Rodney Parade.
“I said before the game I want clean sheets and we didn’t do it. We gave them the two goals. The first one, no-one engaged him and closed the ball down.
“If you do and he bends it into the net then you hold your hands up and say it’s a great finish. We let him run about 20 yards.
“And the second one, it can’t happen, it’s schoolboy football. We could have dealt with it better.
“Butts (Dan Butler) was flat-footed and Biggy (Paul Bignot), instead of engaging the ball and closing it down, he backed off and let him get into the box.
“At the end of the day, you can’t question our character. We’ve scored goals, two fantastic finishes by the big man, that’s what he was brought in for.
“I’m not worried about him running the channels, I want him in the box scoring goals.”
He added: “I thought there were some good performances from us but we’re just disappointed with the manner of the goals we conceded.
“I think we’ve scored in every game this season but you’ve got to keep the back door shut.
“We’re playing half decent, we’ve just got to stop the goals, and at the moment that’s the frustrating thing.
“We can’t give teams head starts and I’m disappointed because I think it’s points dropped.
“There’s no question about us coming back into games but we can’t keep giving teams head starts.
“We’ll go through a few things in training this week and hopefully put it right Saturday.
“It’s unbeaten in three games in the league and you’ve got to take it as a positive.”
