WARREN Feeney drew comparisons between Jon Parkin and Manchester United superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic after Newport County AFC’s 2-2 draw with Cheltenham Town on Saturday.
Man of the match Parkin cancelled out Asa Hall’s strike and then levelled the scores again following Danny Wright’s penalty, as County picked up a point for the third league match in a row.
And County manager Feeney reckons experienced striker Parkin, like Swedish ace Ibrahimovic, is a perfect example of someone who has a fast-working brain but not necessarily fast-moving feet.
“Look at Ibrahimovi?, he’s 34 and is at one of the best teams in the world,” said Feeney.
“I watched their first game this season and people asked where United’s pace was.
“They don’t need pace, they’ve got two world-class superstars up top.
“It’s the same with Jon. He’s been out of the league but his brain is there.
“He knows when to use his body and when not to. I don’t want him running the channels, I want him in that box.”
Commenting further on the impact Parkin has made at the club since his arrival this summer, and the forward’s performance on Saturday, Feeney added: “He’s a delight to work with.
“He doesn’t moan, he comes in every day and lifts the changing room, and I’m delighted for him.
“He wanted to get back into the league and I thought his second goal was exceptional.
“You’ll not see many people produce a first-time finish like that. His all-round performance was very good.
“He was unlucky with one just after half time, I think the keeper made a fantastic save.
“He knows what his job is and he’s fantastic for the changing room as well. I think it’s a real steal that we’ve got him.”
Feeney was also keen to give praise to Parkin’s strike partner Sean Rigg whose work ethic, in the manager’s opinion, “epitomises what we’re about”.
County, who go to Doncaster Rovers next on Saturday, remain 20th in Sky Bet League Two with six points from as many games.
