RINGLAND middleweight Lee Churcher is a man with plenty on his plate at the moment, not least the prospect of a world title fight later this autumn.
The former soldier was meant to be facing Ghana’s Ishmael Tetteh for the World Boxing Union (WBU) crown at the Newport Centre in October.
But now the 35-year-old is preparing for a trip to Nottingham on Bonfire Night, with Coventry’s James Flinn his opponent at the city’s Britannia Hotel.
The bout falls under the jurisdiction of the new British and Irish Boxing Authority (BIBA), an organisation formed by the Malta Boxing Commission’s UK and Irish division.
And according to BIBA, the Churcher-Flinn fight is set to be for the Universal Boxing Organisation (UBO) world middleweight championship.
Churcher has fought at the Nottingham venue before, beating Matt Scriven on points over four rounds in March 2015.
Eighteen months on and the Welshman can’t wait to return to the scene of that triumph, although he would like to be getting ready for it without other things on his mind.
An on-going legal dispute over the use of a room at his mum’s hair salon is the sort of problem Churcher doesn’t need while gearing up for a contest that could make him a world champion.
He is also helping put on a boxing show at Pill Millennium Centre on October 1 which features a Welsh semi-pro title fight and a couple of charity matches.
But despite everything else he is focusing on, the former Welsh champion is going well in training.
“I’m flying at the moment,” he said. “My sparring has been amazing. Everything seems to be perfect with my boxing, but then I’ve got everything else going on outside of it.”
When the chance to fight in his home city fell through there was a chance that Churcher might have appeared on a bill in London on October 22.
Instead, he goes for glory on the Damian Hucker promotion and will be joined on the line-up by Carmarthen’s Carwyn Herbert.
“This is a brilliant opportunity for me,” added Churcher. “James Flinn is not a bad boxer. He’s quite rangy and I come forward so it’s the perfect recipe for a great fight.
“I took 70 people with me when I fought in Nottingham before and I’m hoping we can get two buses this time.”
