HIS only Wales cap came in the same game that a future football superstar made his international debut.
Now Pontypool-born goalkeeper Glyn Garner, 40, has signed for his 12th senior club – Welsh League Division One outfit Goytre.
Garner’s sole appearance for Wales was in a friendly against Trinidad & Tobago at the Merkur Arena in Graz, Austria in May 2006 when he replaced Jason Brown for the second period.
He kept a clean sheet in the 45 minutes he was on the pitch as Wales, thanks to a Rob Earnshaw brace, won 2-1 ahead of the Caribbean side's World Cup debut that summer.
Starting for the Welsh team that day were Gwent pair Danny Gabbidon and James Collins, while a certain teenager by the name of Gareth Bale became his country’s youngest player as a 55th-minute substitute.
Then a left-back with Southampton, Bale won his first cap at the age of 16 years and 315 days, breaking the previous record set by Lewin Nyatanga.
As for Garner, he began his career with then-Welsh League outfit Caerleon and later switched to the Welsh Premier League with Cwmbran Town in 1996-97.
Llanelli was Garner’s next port of call, but he spent just one season with the Stebonheath Park club before securing a move to the Football League in 2000.
Over the next 10 years, Garner made more than 120 league appearances for Bury and then another 86 and 45 for Leyton Orient and Shrewsbury Town respectively.
He then linked up with non-league Grays Athletic and, in 2010-11, made nine appearances for Newport County AFC in the Conference National under then-boss Dean Holdsworth.
His brief spell with the Exiles was followed by two seasons playing for Bath City and three with Cirencester Town.
Garner signed for Merthyr Town in 2016 and played 10 times on loan back at Cirencester before he eventually returned to the Penydarren Park club.
Now he has penned a deal with Goytre, who are under the management of former Cwmbran player and boss Sean Wharton for the second time.
Goytre have also signed a second much-travelled goalkeeper in Giles Cutlan, who returns to the club following a spell with Cinderford Town.
Cutlan, 25, has played for Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran Celtic, Cwmbran Town, AFC Porth and Merthyr.
Garner and Cutlan were both available for tonight's away fixture against Cardiff-based Taffs Well.
