NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn insisted this afternoon’s victory over Mansfield Town was the most satisfying of the season.
Robbie Willmott scored the only goal of the game after 15 minutes as County followed up their FA Cup win over Middlesbrough with a big three points in League Two.
And Flynn praised the work-rate of his players after a gruelling week on a difficult surface at Rodney Parade.
“That’s my most satisfying win of the season,” said the Exiles boss.
“People probably won’t believe that because we’ve beaten Leicester and Middlesbrough [in the FA Cup].
“But as a group of professional footballers what they’ve gone and done today in the way that they fought was my most satisfying win.
“Tuesday night was hard on the legs because of the pitch and mentally it was tough.
“They’re a funny breed. We don’t get too carried away when we win and we don’t get too down when we lose.
“They make me very proud and I won’t get tired of saying that. This performance was first class, it was professional and resilient.”
Mansfield almost scored in the first minute but Nicky Ajose shot over the top from inside the area and Willmott’s strike was enough for the win after 11 minutes were added on due to an injury to visiting substitute Danny Rose.
“I thought the boys were excellent,” said Flynn.
“Mansfield nearly broke record for scoring in the first five seconds and if that had gone in it would have been a totally different game, but that’s my only bad point from us.
“I hope Danny Rose is OK because it didn’t look too good and he might have broken his jaw. That disrupted the game a little bit but I just hope he’s OK.”
