MICHAEL Flynn believes Newport County AFC have given themselves a “fighting chance” of making the League Two play-offs after securing a vital victory at Huish Park.

Second-half goals from Robbie Willmott, Ben Kennedy and substitute Keanu Marsh-Brown sealed a 3-1 win over Yeovil Town, who briefly threatened a comeback after Tom James’ strike from a corner.

Back-to-back wins for the Exiles, who hadn’t played since beating Cheltenham Town on March 15, saw them climb to 11th in the table with eight games to play.

“We’ve got two games in hand [over sixth-placed Forest Green Rovers], so we’ve got a fighting chance,” said Flynn.

“We’ve still got to get those points on the board, but it’s so far, so good.

“I think Swindon [in 10th] are doing really well too – they’ve just got a great result up at Bury [winning 3-1].

“You’re going to have twists and turns before the end of the season, but we’ve got eight games to go and it’s just about who is the most consistent now.”

Flynn was happy with his team’s performance in Somerset as they defended well in the first half and posed a real threat going forward after the break to avenge their shock 6-0 home defeat to the Glovers in September.

“I thought we were very solid and compact in the first half, they didn’t create anything,” said the Exiles boss.

“We’re the away team and they’re fighting for their lives.

“We didn’t want to get counter-attacked, which is what they did to us at home.

“We defended well, kept our shape and they didn’t create anything.

“We knew we’d grow into the game, and that’s what we did.

“In the last 15 minutes of the first half we took control and then in the second half there was only one team in it.

“Some of our attacking play in the second half was unbelievable and the goals we scored were terrific.”
