Millwall defender set to sign but no Newport County return for Sam Foley

McNamara was listed as a trialist in Saturday’s 3-0 friendly win at Hungerford Town but the Argus understands that he has already agreed to join County on loan.

The 20-year-old recently signed a new contract at Millwall after impressing for their under-23 side last season, as well as enjoying loan spells at Dover Athletic and Havant & Waterlooville.

McNamara will compete with fellow new signings Daniel Leadbitter and Marvel Ekpiteta for the right-back spot.

Once the signing is confirmed, Flynn will be looking to add another two players to his squad.

Another trialist, believed to be Bristol City midfielder George Dowling, played in the second half at Hungerford.

“I’m concentrating on the players we’ve got now,” said the Exiles boss.

“There’s one who will stay with us at the moment. I need to get him fit because he’s a very talented player but it gives me a longer time to have a look at him because he’s not fit enough at the moment.

“I’m hoping for two more in, but I’m at the stage now where I’ve got to get to get people out,” he added.

“I’m under no illusion about that; it is what it is.

“I’ve got to get one or two out, unless they force my hand [and improve so much] that I can’t. And if that’s the case, I’ll only need one in.”

Foley, who featured in last week’s friendly win at Weston-super-Mare, is no longer under consideration.

“I’ve spoken to Sam,” said Flynn. “He’s had a very good offer from a Scottish Premier League club and I just wasn’t in the position to offer him [anything to match that].

“We didn’t even discuss terms. I wanted to have a look at him.

“He’s a great lad and somebody I’ve got a lot of time for but I think the deal that he’ll get in Scotland will blow anything we could have offered out of the water because we’re right at the top of our budget.”

Saturday’s win, thanks to goals from Joss Labadie, Corey Whitely and Padraig Amond, was an improvement after last Wednesday’s 9-3 defeat in a behind-closed-doors match at Cardiff City’s training ground.

“If we take the result out of it, that was a really good exercise and it gave us certain things to put right and those aren’t going to take long,” said Flynn.

“You don’t want to concede nine at any time, but it was two penalties and a lot of set-plays. We didn’t get ripped apart; it was a couple of silly errors, if I’m honest.

“Am I concerned about that? No, not really, because I know how consistent they are.

“And the goals we scored [from Whitely, Jamille Matt and a Matty Dolan penalty] were quality goals against a full Championship team. That was pleasing. So it wasn’t all doom and gloom.”

Leadbitter, Ryan Haynes and academy graduate Lewis Collins are all back in training in the build-up to the League Two kick-off at home to Mansfield Town next Saturday.
