BIGWELL: We stocked this week and were pleased to see several blues going in with the rainbows.
It's always a pleasure to have the blues, which tend to be a little more elusive and, once caught, a little more aggressive and exciting to land.
Ben Sullivan, here with his dad Nigel for his first fly fishing experience, caught 5 trout (with a little help from dad) on a green damsel from the top pool. Daniel Pearce caught 9 fish from across all pools, including a 6lb and a 4lb 2oz rainbow. Colin Bryant landed 3 fish, Mark Williams landed 2, Hugo Perks 2, Carl Williams 9 on catch and release, Paul James 3, Gary Tucker 2, Colin Gooch 4, Harry Webb 2, Jason Williams 10, David Evans 5, including a 3lb 5oz blue trout.
Andy Hickman 6, including 1 tiger trout taken on an Alexander fly off the bottom of the lodge pool on an intermediate line.
Popular flies this week have been yellow egg flies, skinny buzzers, green spider, chamois and blood worm (all fished best static under a sight indicator), blue flash damsel, hot head damsel, white snake and, off the top, klinkhammer, black gnat and small hoppers.
We are open every day from 7.30 am.
NEWPORT AND DISTRICT SEA ANGLING CLUB: Results from Goldcliff: 1 Tony Hart, 0.64 kg; 2 Rob Guscott, 0.10 kg.
This week the club travelled to Goldcliff for a Saturday evening competition. Although the weather forecast said it would be dry until the last hour of the competition, contestants were met with fine rain and cold temperatures from the off.
Despite a good turnout of members, all fishing hard, the results were poor with only two people weighing in.
First place went to club secretary Tony Hart, who walked to the venue limits to be rewarded with a flounder to win first prize and most of the pool money. In second place, with the only other fish caught, was Rob Guscott, who winkled out a small rockling, which also gave him a share of the most fish pool.
Next week's competition will be fished at Sudbrook on 02/02/2020. Fishing times will be 10.00am until 14.00pm. Booking in will commence one hour before the start of the competition at Black Rock car park.
