NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn wants his players to put Saturday’s frustrating defeat at Plymouth Argyle behind them and go for glory in the Leasing.com Trophy tomorrow night.
Former Exiles loan star Tyreeq Bakinson appeared to be in an offside position when he netted the only goal of the game in the fifth minute at Home Park.
County then missed a host of chances and saw both Padraig Amond and Mickey Demetriou hit the woodwork,
Flynn felt his side deserved at least a point but he was determined to take the positives after the match.
“We didn’t make the most of the opportunities we created and when Mickey’s free-kick hit the angle of post and bar we knew it wasn’t our day,” he said.
“We’ve played a lot worse and won this season. If we play like that [in every game], nine times out of 10 we will win.”
County lost both Ryan Haynes and Ashley Baker to injury during the defeat to the Pilgrims and both could be doubtful for tomorrow’s Trophy tie at home to Leicester City under-21s (kick-off 7pm).
“It’s too early to tell with Ryan Haynes,” said Flynn. “I think with Ash it’s more of a dead leg from the challenge where the referee said he didn’t get touched.
“I don’t know if he’ll be back for Tuesday, but Dan Leadbitter is fit now and it might be a way of giving him a game and getting some minutes under his belt.”
County know that victory tomorrow would earn them around £70,000 in prize money and a TV fee for the semi-final at home to Salford City.
“We’ll go strong,” said Flynn. “We’re two games from Wembley and there’s money at stake for the football club.
“Within reason, it will be our strongest side. We’ll be going for it.
“We’ll have a look at it, dust them down and see who’s right and go from there.
“Now I’ve got almost a fully fit squad they are going to have to earn the right to get into this team. I haven’t got time to wait for people to get up to speed.
“That’s how it will be until the end of the season.”
Deadline day loan signing Otis Khan is cup-tied in the Trophy but Flynn is excited to have the Mansfield man on board.
“I’m very pleased,” said the Exiles boss. “If he was on the bench [at Plymouth], I don’t think we would have lost.
“We were tracking him for a while but he’s on a good package at Mansfield and we had to come to an agreement.
“Graham Coughlin at Mansfield was superb, Otis showed a big desire to come and our board were good and [new club secretary] Ben Lucey got the deal over the line.”
Asked if he missed out on any other targets on Friday, Flynn said: “No, it was only one that I was really looking to get in before the deadline. We’ll find out on the others later.”
