A number of Gwent squad players made the journey to Welshpool to play in the Mid Wales JSS tournament.
Sarah Haynes (Pontypool) was the sole Gwent squad player in the U13 tournament. Playing against both familiar faces from South Wales and one or two new ones from North Wales.
Having lost her first match in two games, she then played Jessica Faulkner from North Wales, knowing she had to win to progress.
This match turned out to be very hard closely fought match going to three games. Sarah lost the first game 15-13, but fought hard in the second to win 15-11.
The match was all down to the last game, Sarah finally coming out on top winning the final game 15-14 to progress to the quarter-finals.
She was drawn against Hannah Freeman in the quarter-final but after two hard fought games lost 15-4, 15-8.
Wales & Gwent U13 player Mike Kinnear (Cwmbran), decided to take on the U15 in this JSS.
Mike performed well in his box winning two of the three matches and gaining a quarter-final place.
In the quarter-final match Mike won against Matthew Riley in a tight three game match 15-13, 11-15, 15-10 to reach the semi finals.
Michael Phillips was his semi final opponent, but Mike lost out 15-6, 15-4 on a place in the final.
Five squad players were involved in this age group with Chris Killick (Pontypool), Matthew Haynes (Pontypool), James Kinnear (Cwmbran), Sam O' Callaghan (Brynmawr) and Evan Hughes (Ebbw Vale) all taking part.
With two boxes it was inevitable that squad players would come up against one another.
With Matthew Haynes winning two of his three matches, he was the only Gwent Squad player to progress through to the Semi Finals.
Chris Killick and Jamie Kinnear both won one match, but failed to progress.
Matthew Haynes met Daniel Font in the Semi Final and missed out on a place in the final losing out to Daniel 15-6, 15-11.
The doubles tournament also saw two Gwent squad pairings, Matthew Haynes & Chris Killick and Sam O'Callaghan and Evan Hughes. With only one box the winners and runners up would progress to a final.
With Haynes/Killick winning the match against their Gwent squad colleagues 15-5, 15-11, it was them who progressed to the final against the pairing of Oliver Gwilt and Daniel Font.
The final was won over two games with Gwilt & Font, coming out on top 21-11, 21-17, leaving the Gwent pairing to come away with the runners up medal.
Wales U17 player Hannah Killick (Pontypool) was the sole female Gwent squad member playing at this tournament.
She won her box at a canter and landed a semi-final match against Welsh U13 player, Jordan Hart.
Hannah took this in her stride winning the match 15-9, 15-11.
Hannah then faced Stephanie Marti-Jones in the final. This was a much closer affair with the match being won by Hannah in two very close games, 22-20 and 21-19.
Killick collected the U17 Girls singles title to add to her collection.
The Doubles saw Hannah team up with Jordan Hart.
Again there was only one box and having won two of the three matches saw Hannah and Jordan progress to the final. The final was against Giorgia Hughes and Stephanie Marti-Jones.
Unfortunately Hannah and Jordan lost the match 21-11, 21-17 to come away with the runners-up medal.
The mixed doubles saw Hannah team up with Oliver Gwilt, once again with only one box and three pairings.
Winning one match was enough to see Hannah and Oliver make it through to the final.
Hannah and Oliver met Daniel Font and Giorgia Hughes in the final and with both games being closely fought it was Font and Hughes who came out on top winning the final 21-17, 21-17.
A good day all around for Gwent Badminton coming away with the Girls U17 singles title and runner up titles in U17 Boys Doubles, U17 Girls Doubles and U17 Mixed Doubles.
