A HEAVY thunderstorm an hour and a half before kick-offs led to very heavy and wet conditions for Saturday's Knauf Insulation Gwent Central League games.
In a Premiership Division basement battle Lower New Inn played away to bottom of the table club Llanfoist.
Lower New Inn established a 3-1 half-time lead before going on to win the match 8-1. Goal scorers for Lower New Inn were Alex Probert, hat-trick, Gavin Millar (2) and Jason Williams, Nathan Kersley and James Godfrey scored one a piece. Jason Bowen scored a consolation goal for Llanfoist. Man of the match for Llanfoist was Carl James, man of the match for Lower New Inn, Alex Probert. Lower New Inn stays in 8th position. Llanfoist are in 9th position.
Pontypool Town got back to winning ways with a 6-3 home win at Albion Road over visitors Gilwern and District. Pontypool Town led 4-1 at half-time.
Pontypool Town's goals came from a Richard Wakeling hat-trick. Scott Taylor got two and Matthew O'Neil one. Goal scorers for Gilwern and District were Owen Edwards, Graham Rees and Richard James, man of the match for Pontypool Town was goal keeper Justin Silver, man of the match for Gilwern and District was Chris Davies.
Gilwern and District are in 6th position. Pontypool Town holds 7th position.
Match of the day in Division One was current leaders Fairfield United's visit to Clydach Wasps. The match ended in a 2-1 win for Clydach Wasps, Simon Tippins gave a goal from a shot of ten yards, Ryan Young scored Clydach Wasps second goal and John Jenkins scored for Fairfield United. Man of the match for Fairfield United was Allan Russell. Fairfield United stays in second position. Clydach Wasps holds third position with games in hand.
Blaenavon Blues took maximum points from their visit to Sebastopol by winning the match 7-0. The Blues led 4-0 at half-time, goal scorers for Blaenavon Blues were Ben Parry (2), Vinny Evans, Mark Harris, Leon Cutley, and Lee Carrick plus a Sebastopol own goal by Gareth Richards. Man of the match was Ben Perry of Blaenavon Blues. Blaenavon Blues holds top position. Sebastopol holds 14th position.
Panteg's game at home to Govilon was postponed by the match referee at kick-off time due to a waterlogged pitch. The Tranch v Pilcs game was also postponed.
In Division Two Pontypool Town B kept up their winning ways with a 4-2 away win over Gilwern B. The sides were level 1-1 at half-time. Goal scorers for Gilwern B were Geraint Morris and Tim Skarratts.
Pontypool Town B's goals came from Chris Stokes, Alan Jenkins and super sub Matthew Kay scored two. His last came from the last kick of the game. Man of the match for Gilwern B was Tom Russell, man of the match for Pontypool Town B, Chris Stokes. Gilwern B are in 6th position, Pontypool Town B holds seventh position.
A club winning double for Pontypool on the day Prescoed got back into league action with a 3-2 win over Llanarth B. Goal scorers for Prescoed were Anthony Llewellyn, Chris Went and Dean Hutchinson.
Geraint Edge scored both of the Llanarth B goals. Man of the match for Llanarth B was goalkeeper Scott McIlroy. Man of the match for Prescoed was John Cooper. Prescoed stay in third position, Llanarth B stay in fifth position. Usk Town B failed to raise a side for their visit to Trevethin B.
In the A Jones and Co (Usk) Limited Open Benevolent Cup round one, New Inn won their local derby over Race 5-1. New Inn led 2-0 at half-time. New Inn goals came from two by Jeff Tozer plus one each by Carl Brown, Mark King and Billy Day.
The Race goal was scored by Daniel Waters. New Inn will play Pontypool Town A in the next round.
A Jones and Co (Usk) Limited Open Benevolent Cup round two. Abergavenny Thursdays entertained local rivals Pandy on Pen-y-Pound stadium.
Victory went to visitors Pandy 6-1 over the home side. Pandy established a 3-0 half-time lead. Goal scorers for Pandy were a Jason Osbourne hat-trick. Chris Morgan (2), and Mike Smith (1), Kieran James scored the Thursdays goal.
Newcomers Trevethin B had a 7-2 away win in the cup over Llanarth A. Trevethin led 2-0 at half-time and quickly went 3-0 up in the second half. Llanarth pulled back two goals by Stephen Morgan and Steven Wheatstone to pull the score back to 3-2 to Trevethin but before the end Trevethin scored four more goals.
Goal scorers for Trevethin A were Dwain Hunt (2), to take his season's goal tally so far to 46. Chris Perry (2), Shaun Williams (2), and Tyrone Rowlands.
Goytre had a 3-2 cup win over visitors Mardy. Scott Askew put Goytre 1-0 up with a goal headed across the goalmouth in the 30th minute. Justin Swain put Mardy level at 1-1 with a goal scored in the 44th minute.
The score stayed at 1-1 after 90 minutes extra time was played. Shaun Ellis scored for Goytre and Jayde Kelly levelled for Mardy at 2-2. Craig Jolliffe then scored the Goytre's winner.
In the A Jones and Co (Usk) Limited Langdon Open Cup round two, Crickhowell were the visitors to the Island to take on Usk Town but it was Usk Town who established a 6-1 half-time lead before going on to win the match 8-1. Usk Town A goals came from a Carl McEwan hat-trick, Sean Taylor (2), Lewis Thomas, Rhys Pritchard and Charlie Ashworth all scored one a piece.
The match was well refereed by stand-in referee Colin Jones of Usk.
