MORE than half of the league's Saturday's programme was postponed due to waterlogged grounds following nearly a week of heavy rain.
However, the three scheduled games in the Premier Division all went ahead. Match of the day was top side Trevethin's 4-1 home win over second placed Pandy. The sides play each other three times and this was Trevethin's second win out of the three. The sides were level 1-1 at half-time. Goal scorers for Trevethin were Dwaine Hunt (2), to take his season's tally so far to 48, Shaun Williams and David Jennings. The goal scorer for Pandy was Steven Morgan. Man of the match for Trevethin was David Jennings, man of the match for Pandy was Steven Wedlock.
Trevethin had a player sent off after the final whistle. Trevethin go four points clear at the top with games in hand. Pandy, also with games in hand drop, to third position.
Goytre move up to second position following their 7-1 away win at Llanfoist. Goytre led 1-0 at half-time but added six more goals in the second half. Goytre's goals came from an Adam Roberts' hat trick, Chris Wilkins, Scott Askew, Jon Parkinson, plus a Scott Taylor penalty. The Llanfoist goal was scored by Gareth Williams, which cleared the Goytre keeper from the edge of the box, on the hour. Man of the match for Llanfoist was Gareth Williams, man of the match for Goytre was Marcus Warner. Llanfoist are in ninth position. Local referee Robert Wade took over the whistle when the appointed referee failed to turn up. Mr Wade had a good game.
Llanarth visited the Island to take on Usk Town who won the match 5-0. The sides have met three times this season and Usk Town have completed a hat trick of wins (October 6, 3-2 home win; November 17, 6-2 away win). Goals for Usk Town came from a Jeremy Barton hat trick, plus a goal each from Carl McEwan and Geraint Kalies. Barton's hat trick was made up from - goal number one when he rounded the Llanarth keeper to score, goal number two was a ten-yard shot into the corner of the net, and goal number three came from a simple tap in. Man of the match for Usk Town was Carl McEwan, man of the match for Llanarth was Luke Williams. Usk Town hold fourth position, Llanarth are in fifth position.
Only one game beat the weather in Division One. Pilcs beat visitors Mardy 4-1. Pilcs led 2-1 at half-time. Goal scorers for Pilcs were Chris Perry (2) and Justin Edmunds (2). Matthew Lynch scored Mardy's goal. Man of the match for Pilcs was Chris Perry, man of the match for Mardy was Jayde Kelly. Mardy are in seventh position, Pilcs hold tenth position.
The scheduled game in Division Two went ahead with Gilwern B drawing 1-1 with visitors Trevethin B. The sides were level 0-0 at half-time. Tim Skarratts scored Gilwern B's goal with a shot on the hour. Nathan Williams scored the Trevethin B goal with a free kick from 18 yards. Man of the match for Gilwern B was Stewart Bees, man of the match for Trevethin B was Nathan Williams. Trevethin B, with games in hand, are in second position, Gilwern B are in sixth position. Referee Richard Pond had a good game.
Only two of the scheduled five games were played in the second round of the A Jones & Co Usk Ltd Benevolent Open Cup.
Fairfield United won their local derby away match at Cwmffrwdoer 4-0. Fairfield led 2-0 at half-time. Fairfield won last season's final 1-0 over Pilcs. So the holders are through to the next round. Daley Whitcombe put Fairfield 1-0 up with a penalty goal in the 20th minute. Daniel Jenkins made it 2-0 with a goal scored in the 40th minute. In the second half Fairfield scored two more through Leigh Williams, his first and Fairfield's third, in the 80th minute and his second scored in the 85th minute. Both his goals came from one on ones with the Cwmffrwdoer acting keeper Gareth Baker, who replaced keeper Matthew Edwards after 15 minutes. Edwards went off with a hamstring injury.
In the other game, Blaenavon Blues, who are top of Division One, played host to Clydach B who are currently top of Division Two. Clydach B won the match 6-5. At half-time the score was 1-0 to the Blues.
Clydach B pulled level 1-1 in the second half. The match went into extra time and the score stayed at 1-1.
In the penalty shoot-out, the Blues scored four out of five but Clydach B scored five out of five for an overall 6-5 win. Craig Willliams scored to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. Nathan Wall put Clydach B level 1-1 with a goal scored in the second half. Penalty goal scorers for Blaenavon Blues were Joseph Ward, Lee Garrick, Daryl Brenton and Leon Gatley.
Penalty goal scorers for Clydach B were Nathan Wall, Mark Harvey, Paul Bufton, Jason Lewis and Luke Walsh.
So the minnows go through to the next round and are capable of taking another scalp.
