PETER Beadle has described Newport County's 1-0 win over bottom of the league Sutton United this weekend as the Exiles' "most important win of the season."
Jason Bowen's first half penalty at Gander Green Lane was enough to take the Exiles back up into the Blue Square South play-off positions.
County dominated for long periods in a game of few chances and could move to within a point of third in the league if they beat Hampton and Richmond on Saturday.
It was enough to satisfy boss Beadle who praised the mentality of his side.
He explained: "Maybe last season we wouldn't have ground out the result and won the game.
"It showed that our character, grit and determination can see us through.
"In many ways it was a much harder game than against Cambridge on Wednesday night, even though Cambridge are a much better footballing side.
"Sutton work hard, the pitch is poor, it's a horrible place to come and in spells, large spells, we controlled the game."
"We got impatient because we didn't get the early goal, but last year we wouldn't have won so comfortably," he continued.
"We never really looked threatened and I think that is as good a result as we've had all season.
"Sutton have taken four points off Hampton this year, they will upset teams that still have to come here. It was a very big result for us."
Beadle revealed his side defended just as he had hoped.
"We must defend all over the pitch, it's a team responsibility because teams are really coming at us because they fear us," he said.
"Our ethics haven't changed, all over the pitch I expect players to work hard and look to win the ball and we did that.
"Players like Jason Bowen and Richard Evans didn't have a very prosperous day in terms of their attacking performance, but they worked very, very hard.
"It's a very big result for us and we now move to six unbeaten in the league.
"Four wins and two draws and that is the kind of form we need, we are capable of pushing on and we now turn our attention to Hampton.
"Consistency is the key, at the moment we seem to have it and I want us to keep going."
