Aberavon 13 Blackwood 42
THERE was no cup upset as Blackwood blew away the spirited Seasiders to secure a place in the last 16 of the Konica Minolta Cup.
It was a routine success for the visitors, who showed superior pace, fitness and power to make sure that the Division Three South West underdogs were always chasing a lost cause.
In the end Blackwood crossed for half a dozen touchdowns, with wing Owain Williams going over in each half to lead the way.
The poor underfoot conditions did not hamper the well- tuned Gwent side, who showed superb handling skills to complement quality with the quantity of points scored.
Peter Emanueli gave Blackwood an early lead with a penalty before the Quins replied with a similar effort from Marc Shepperd.
Blackwood pressed home their growing dominance through a second Emanueli penalty and worked a first touchdown for Christian Perry.
But the hosts gave their fans something to cheer when Craig Cox went over and the conversion by Shepperd cut the Blackwood lead to 11-10.
That was a signal for the visitors to move up a gear, and it paid dividends as Sean Emery and Williams crossed for fine tries, Emanueli converting the latter.
Although a second Shepperd penalty made it 23-13 to Blackwood at the break, it was the final points-scoring act for the Quins as the visitors took control of the tie.
Second-half touchdowns from centre David James, Williams and replacement Greg Davies, with Emanueli adding two conversions, completed Blackwood's tally.
