James Ball in action at the Commonwealth Games
GWENT cyclist James Ball won Wales' first medal of the Commonwealth Games after being pipped to gold.
The 31-year-old from Ponthir set a Games record in the men’s tandem B 1000m time trial with a time of 1:00.053 at Lee Valley VeloPark with pilot Matt Rotherham.
However, he was again pipped by Scotland’s Neil Fachie, the man who edged him out at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. It was a fifth Commonwealth gold for the veteran, whose pilot was Lewis Stewart.
Four-time world champion Ball, who switched to cycling after previously starring on the athletics track, adds another medal to an impressive CV.
The Gwent cyclist will go for more success in the tandem sprint on Sunday.
