COUNTY'S Blue Square South play-off hopes have received a major boost with the news of Bishop's Stortford's defeat at Welling United.
First half goals from Sonny Cobbs and Orlando Smith gave the Wings an unlikely victory on Tuesday night and put Stortford, who could have caught the Exiles on goal difference had they won, out of the promotion picture.
The result means that Peter Beadle's men will definitely clinch a top five finish with a win over fourth-placed Fisher Athletic on Saturday unless Eastleigh in fifth also win at Thurrock and Braintree rack up a cricket score at home to Eastbourne Borough.
County could also make the play-offs with a draw at Spytty Park but, concentrate, this is where things get complicated.
The point would take them up to a final total of 67 with the goal difference remaining the same at 16.
For that to be enough Eastleigh would have to lose by two goals at Thurrock, leaving them on 67 points and with a goal difference of 15.
Braintree would also have to lose or draw at home to Eastbourne, Bath City would need to lose or draw at Stortford and, finally, the Exiles would be hoping that Bromley don't win by five goals at home to relegated Dorchester Town.
One thing is certain, lose to Fisher and the dream of playing Blue Square Premier football is over for another year.
