DARREN Morgan has become World Masters Snooker champion for the sixth time – and says it’s his most special success yet.
The 56-year-old Gwent potter added to his crammed trophy cabinet when claiming the title in Turkey this month.
Morgan came through his group to make the knockout stages where he eased past Peter Bullen 4-0, Kevin Zarekani 4-1 and Noppadon Noppachorn 5-1 to make the final.
There he faced former World Team Cup champion Manan Chandra from India, who was playing in the masters category for the first time.
Morgan moved into a 4-3 lead to be on the brink of the title and then took the spoils thanks to clearing up in the eighth frame after a snooker on the brown.
“It was a tense final and at 56 the standard is getting higher every year as more 40-year-olds become eligible,” said Morgan.
“It was a privilege to put my Welsh vest on. I did it for the first time in 1987 and in some ways it feels even more special in my twilight years.”
