NEWPORT County AFC striker Omar Bogle has said “it’s 2023 – do better” after being racially abused in the 2-0 win at Gillingham.
The Exiles frontman was the victim of a monkey gesture after slotting the first of his two penalties at Priestfield Stadium.
The incident was reported to referee Tom Reeves, who then informed both managers, the fourth official and stewards.
The EFL have confirmed that the individual has been identified and arrested and the Kent club have banned him for life.
“Firstly I want to thank everyone for the messages of support after the match,” Bogle posted on Instagram.
“Listen, this problem is bigger than just football but in life, as we keep saying, there’s no place for racism.
“It’s 2023. Do better.
“I appreciate the support I received from the Gillingham players and staff and also a lot of the supporters and I urge you all to continue to drive out the minority that stain the club’s reputation and value.
“I also think it’s weird and a bit alarming that Sky Sports have decided to cut short the footage [on the highlights] after I scored both goals.
“Don’t hide the [expletive], let it be seen in plain sight so everyone can witness the behaviour that is very much alive in all walks of life in our game at all levels. #cantstopwontstop”
