NEWPORT RFC’s biggest-ever win over Pontypridd saw the Black & Ambers move to the top of the Indigo Premiership this week.
The stunning 54-3 victory at a wet and windy Newport Stadium on Wednesday night made it four wins in a row for Tyron Morris’ men and six out of seven games in the Premiership.
The visitors got the first points on the board when full-back Josh Phillips slotted over a very early penalty kick.
After that, it was one-way traffic for the Black & Ambers.
They opened their tally after the 10-minute mark when a quick Che Hope tap-and-go fed Elliot Frewen who crossed over for his second of the season and his 84th for the club overall.
Early in the second quarter, Matt O’Brien caught the defence napping to storm over to bag Newport’s second try.
The third came after half an hour when some relentless pressure close to the try line eventually led to Oli Andrew crossing over on the right wing.
The bonus point was secured shortly before the half-time whistle as Carwyn Penny strolled over for Newport’s fourth try of the night, all converted by Penny.
Henry Palmer’s tap-and-go saw him bulldoze over the line for his side’s fifth score before he grabbed his second try of the night with a typical catch-and-drive.
Further tries from Chay Foster-Smith and Dafydd completed the rout.
Newport return to league action on November 11 when they make their second visit of the season to the capital to face the Blue & Blacks of Cardiff.
