ST Joseph’s Boxing Club has been voted as club of the year by the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association.
The club have produced a veritable who’s who of champions including current IBF World Super-Featherweight champion Joe Cordina, his fellow Olympian Andrew Selby, Olympic silver medallist Fred Evans as well as Commonwealth Games gold medallist and current professional British champion Sean McGoldrick.
More recently British amateur champion Axel Hegarty and clubmates Orlando Sotomi and Saads Abdullah have progressed onto the full-time Welsh development programme.
The current success is not limited to the senior members of the club; youth boxers Gabe Williams, Reon Wright, Ben Wetter and Gary Buckland have won the Welsh leg of the National Boys Clubs Championships and will progress onto the next leg against English opposition.
On receiving the award, club coach Bill Reynolds said: “We are extremely proud to receive such an accolade, but this award is not only about the boxers and the coaches, it is a collective award as without the support of our sponsors and the help and patience of the parents it would make what we do much more difficult.”
However, it is not only in the gym that the St. Joseph’s are having an impact on the Newport community, the coaches have been busy visiting several schools and delivered health and wellness lessons.
These sessions have clearly been a successful venture as a number of the pupils are now attending the gym on a regular basis.
