AARON Wildig isn’t giving up on a late charge for the League Two play-offs despite Newport County AFC’s injury problems.

The Exiles head to second-placed Stockport this afternoon five points off the top seven with 11 fixtures to play.

Graham Coughlan’s side were tipped for a relegation scrap but are instead contenders, albeit outsiders, for the play-offs.

“Most people would say that we have had a good season,” said midfielder Wildig. “We had the FA Cup run and then, after all our injuries, we are in a position where we are not looking over our shoulder, we are looking up.

“Put a few wins together and we can put ourselves in a position where we can look to sneak into the play-offs.

“For the next 11 fixtures, it’s just a case of attacking each game because we have put ourselves in a position where we can be positive.

“We’ve won six of our last nine but have come up short against top sides, so it’s a good test to come away with at least something after Mansfield and MK Dons.”

County have recently lost captain Ryan Delaney, his fellow centre-back James Clarke and right-back Shane McLoughlin to injury, that after a raft of blows last autumn.

“I've never seen anything like it and I've been in professional footie for 13 years,” said Wildig. “Pretty much every one of the back five has picked up a serious injury.

“We looked like we were going to have the whole squad coming back and then we lost a few key players again.

“People have stepped up at different times and performed, so it will have to be the same again.”
